To be effective, mineral licks should be properly located away from roads and property boundaries, but near cover. Follow manufacturer’s directions as to application, as they differ.

Evolved Habitat Block Topper. This attractant can be added to a mineral lick to increase usage. Set out the mineral mix and then pour the powdered portion of Block Topper on top and around it. Next, slowly pour the liquid portion of Block Topper on top and around the minerals and it will candy-coat the entire site.

In addition to mineral supplements, protein supplements are also extremely important. Several companies produce protein blocks or mixes: Hi Protein Big Buck Block by Antler King, Rut Nuts by Megabucks, Antler ‘n Acorns, BuckMaster 400, and Imperial 30-06 “Plus Protein” by Whitetail Institute.

“All you can do with nutrition is allow the deer to show their genetic potential,” sums up Cromwell. “The greatest products in the world will never build antlers larger than those determined by an animal’s genes. But poor nutrition can keep you from seeing the quality genes you may have in a deer you are hunting.”

Note: Make sure you understand your state’s ruling on the uses of minerals, salt, and protein supplements for deer herds. Some of these may be illegal if used in conjunction with hunting. Some deer blocks containing proteins such as corn chips may be considered baiting for turkeys and may be illegal even if deer season is over.
